The story behind the work

I learned to program in 1984 on a Radio Shack TRS-80, when I was ten years old. I liked making a computer do things. I didn’t know it was the beginning of anything.

In the late nineties I worked at a big outsourced call center. I started as an Apple technician, and within six months I was a technical team lead. The environment was rough. Every few weeks, teams got pulled into an office and yelled at about metrics they had never seen and couldn’t verify. Management had the reports. The workers didn’t.

I didn’t accept that. I taught myself to combine the reports, because no single report showed the truth, but five of them cross-referenced showed exactly where we stood against our contractual metrics. I built the system, and I ran my team by it. My team never got pulled into those meetings again. The company adopted the system worldwide. I never got a raise or a bonus for it, but my people stopped being afraid, and that was the point.

After that I moved into network engineering, supporting everyone from home users to the Pentagon and NASA. Then in 2002 I left corporate and started consulting. The tools kept changing, from spreadsheets to coaching frameworks to AI systems. The work never did: find the data nobody thought to combine, build the thing that shows people where they stand, and watch the fear leave the room.

That is the whole method. It has worked the same way for twenty-three years.
